The Science Behind Being Safe: Do You Have Hand Sanitizer?
There is a lot of talk in the news and online about washing our hands. Never before has there been so much education being offered about washing our hands! As things progress nationally over the coronavirus, it is just logical to prepare and arm ourselves with the tools we need to stay healthy. Still, hand washing isn’t always the only option.
What Does Science Say?
Handwashing for 30 seconds is the preferred way to keep germs and viruses off of our hands, and then hopefully off of our faces—where we can contract the Covid-19. But when hand washing isn’t practical—at least in a moment of concern when you are at work, or outside for any reason, then hand sanitizer is the next best option—if it is used correctly!
Hand Sanitizers Do Work
According to the CDC, “using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can help you avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.” This makes it the perfect option if you are at work, or grocery shopping, or anywhere that you do not have the opportunity of using soap and water. The first problem with using hand sanitizer is that most people do not know how to use hand sanitizers properly. And the second is finding it on the shelves! We are here to talk about both.
Problem #1: Being In A Hurry Isn’t Good
“Haste” is the number one reason that hand sanitizers don’t work in fighting germs. Think about it: You run into your office after returning from lunch when your boss stops you ask for that report right now. You head to your desk and quickly hit the hand sanitizer pump once, then twice. Now you briskly rub our hands together as you eye that report on your desk. You are not thinking about the lotion on your hand, but does that quick pump of the lotion have time to fight the 99.9% of germs promised on the bottle? According to most doctors, it does not.
How to Properly Apply Hand Sanitizer
The first rule of properly applying hand sanitizer is take your time!
- When you hit the pump, hit it twice to get the right amount of lotion on your hands. You want to make sure that you have ENOUGH on your hands so that you can wipe out all the germs. Now start rubbing the lotion all over your hands. Make sure you go in between your fingers, up over the top of your hands, and near your nails.
- Now keep rubbing the lotion in until every part of both sides of your hands are covered in the lotion.
- Rub those hands together for at least 30 seconds to allow your hands to absorb the product completely.
- Once every part of both hands is covered in lotion, it is time to let your hands dry. Until your hands are completely dry, you risk the chance of transferring germs, so do not pick up a fork, touch your laptop, check your text messages, or make a call until your hands are DRY.
- Enjoy this momentary break. As you are waiting for your hands to dry, the hand sanitizers will immediately go to work, swiftly killing 99.9 percent of all microorganisms on our hands.
